Investment on staff training should earn the company some good returns, it probably enhanced perceived staff welfare level and in turn, lowered staff turnover. A company whose staff has low morale will pay $X to get $2X worth of work done whereas, one with high morale can go up to $3X worth of work. So, this is a higher leverage. My own speculation.
If the daily (twice) breaks and lunches were not enough, today there was a dinner for more interaction. Smart move, bonding is usually done over good food. Effectively, I did get to know many new faces which would come in handy (this is secondary) and of course, for social purposes.
